The redevelopment of 623–627 Cleveland Street transforms a dark, inward-facing row of storefronts into a series of open, inviting retail spaces—reestablishing a direct connection to the sidewalk.
Previously defined by low visibility, minimal transparency and a continuous façade with few points of entry, the building created a disconnected presence along Cleveland Street. This project addresses that condition by introducing multiple storefronts, increased openness and clearly defined access at the street level.
The façade is reconfigured with floor-to-ceiling glazing and three distinct retail entrances, creating a sequence that aligns with pedestrian movement. Each entry is framed by integrated planting elements, adding texture and reinforcing a human-scale experience along the sidewalk.
What emerges is not simply a renovation, but a reactivation of the streetscape—transforming a continuous barrier into a series of accessible, engaging destinations.
Raised soffits increase the façades’ welcoming retail presence.
Glass entry doors extend from floor to ceiling.
Green walls retain foliage throughout the year.
A primary objective of the project is to redefine how the building engages with the street.
The existing continuous façade is divided into multiple storefronts, each with its own entrance and identity. This creates a sequence of access points that aligns with pedestrian movement, making the building easier to enter and move through.
The introduction of floor-to-ceiling glazing increases visibility into the space—strengthening the relationship between interior activity and the sidewalk.
The redevelopment prioritizes the experience of people moving along Cleveland Street.
By introducing multiple entry points and variation across the façade, the building shifts from a static presence to one that responds to movement along the sidewalk. Integrated planting elements at each entrance soften the transition between public and private space—creating a more comfortable and engaging street edge.
The design introduces a consistent rhythm across the façade, breaking down the scale of the building into smaller, more approachable components.
This repetition of entrances and vertical elements creates visual continuity while maintaining distinct identities for each retail space. The result is a façade that supports a more active and visually engaging street.
The transformation of 623–627 Cleveland Street improves both function and street presence.
By increasing access, visibility and engagement, the project strengthens the retail environment while contributing to a more walkable and active Cleveland Street corridor.
