639 Cleveland Street

The redevelopment of 639 Cleveland Street transforms an outdated and inefficient structure into a modern building with improved function and a stronger presence along Cleveland Street.

Previously constrained by a fragmented layout and a flat, unarticulated façade, the building limited visibility, circulation and effective use of space. This project addresses those conditions through a complete reorganization of both the interior and exterior—opening the ground floor to Cleveland Street while establishing a clearer and more active street presence.

A newly designed façade introduces depth and rhythm through recessed forms and sculptural shadow boxes, creating a stronger visual presence along the street. At the same time, vertical circulation has been reconfigured to establish a continuous and uninterrupted retail frontage at ground level.

The addition of a new lobby, grand stair and improved access to upper levels repositions the building as a more functional and connected part of the corridor.

What emerges is not simply a renovated structure, but a complete transformation—strengthening the building’s presence along Cleveland Street and aligning it with the activity of the district.

Interior Reorganization

A primary focus of the project is the complete reconfiguration of the building’s internal layout.

Previously fragmented spaces have been reorganized to improve circulation, usability and flexibility. By relocating vertical circulation elements, the design frees the ground floor for uninterrupted retail use—maximizing visibility and direct access along Cleveland Street.

This restructuring transforms the building from a constrained interior environment into a more functional and adaptable commercial space.

Façade Redesign

The building’s exterior has been reimagined to create a stronger and more engaging street presence.

A series of recessed volumes and shadow boxes introduce depth, contrast and rhythm across the façade—replacing the previously flat condition with a more articulated street-facing surface.

The result is a façade that contributes to the visual energy of Cleveland Street while establishing a distinct identity for the building.

Vertical Circulation and Access

The relocation and redesign of vertical circulation is central to the building’s transformation.

By repositioning stairs and access points, the project improves movement throughout the structure while enabling a clear and uninterrupted retail frontage at street level. The addition of a new lobby and grand stair enhances both functionality and access.

These changes ensure that the building operates more effectively while supporting active commercial use.

Project Impact

The redevelopment of 639 Cleveland Street resolves long-standing limitations in both form and function—transforming the building into a stronger and more active part of the Cleveland Street corridor.

By improving layout, access and street presence, the project contributes to a more continuous and active downtown environment.
