Cleveland Street’s Historic Timepiece Is About to Return

Before cell phones, smartwatches and instant access to the time, there was one place nearly everyone in downtown Clearwater looked when they wanted to know the hour.

There was the clock.

A new public feature released by the Cleveland Street Alliance explores the story of the historic four-faced clock that stood above the intersection of Cleveland Street and Fort Harrison Avenue—serving as one of downtown Clearwater’s most familiar landmarks and helping keep downtown life moving through the heart of the city.

Titled Cleveland Street’s Time, the new video follows the Cleveland Street Alliance’s recent public history features by focusing on a single downtown icon: the Peoples Bank clock that watched over Cleveland Street during some of its most active decades.

The feature explores an era when public clocks were part of the infrastructure of everyday life. Long before personal devices placed the time in every pocket, residents, visitors, merchants and workers relied on prominent public clocks as shared points of reference throughout the day.

On Cleveland Street, that role belonged to the clock at Peoples Bank.

Installed during the building’s First National Bank era, the clock became a defining presence above one of downtown Clearwater’s most important intersections. For generations, it stood at the crossroads of the city’s commercial and civic life.

Now, Cleveland Street’s time has come again.

The clock told Cleveland Street when to open, when to close and when to meet. It stood above the movement of the district as people shopped, worked, gathered and passed through the center of downtown. For many, it became more than a clock—it became a landmark, a meeting place and a familiar part of everyday life.

The feature also highlights the broader role public clocks once played in American downtowns, when banks, courthouses, railroads and churches helped communities operate on a shared sense of time.

Through historic imagery, animated recreations and present-day footage, Cleveland Street’s Time brings the story of this downtown icon back into view while revealing how a single landmark became woven into the daily rhythms of Clearwater life.

Today, that familiar landmark has been carefully restored as part of the broader rehabilitation of the historic Peoples Bank Building.

After decades overlooking downtown Clearwater, Cleveland Street’s historic timepiece is preparing to return to its place above one of the city’s most recognizable intersections.

A public unveiling celebrating the restoration is planned in the coming days, marking the return of one of downtown Clearwater’s most enduring landmarks.
