Structural Surprise Shapes Future of 639 Cleveland

Crews remove interior walls and ceilings at 639 Cleveland Street, revealing hidden structural elements and decades of mismatched repairs.

Interior demolition has revealed a layered history inside 639 Cleveland Street. Crews removed finishes including ceilings, walls and flooring, exposing decades of changes to the structure.

Behind the surface, mismatched materials—terra-cotta blocks, bricks and concrete masonry units (CMU)—painted a portrait of continuous adaptation. This visual record of renovation hinted at how the building evolved across decades.

The most striking discovery came with the full exposure of the steel frame. Contrary to past assumptions, it stands entirely independent from the exterior walls, giving designers greater freedom in planning the building’s adaptive reuse. The finding sets a new course for the building’s restoration.
