Historic Clock Components Receive Patina Restoration at Peoples Bank

Cleaning copper clock canopy before patina restoration.
A restoration specialist scrubs a copper clock canopy component, removing oxidation and preparing the surface for a recreated historic patina.

The restoration of the historic Peoples Bank clock continues as a restoration specialist carefully cleans and treats the clock’s copper components to recreate their original blue-green patina. Over decades, exposure to the elements altered the clock’s finish, diminishing a defining architectural detail of this downtown landmark.

Applying patina treatment to historic clock copper.
Patina compounds are applied by hand to a copper clock component, recreating the blue-green finish historically associated with the Peoples Bank clock.

The restoration process involves removing surface oxidation and applying specialized treatments that replicate the natural chemical reaction copper develops over time. Once completed, the renewed patina will complement the Mediterranean Revival character of the Peoples Bank building and restore an important visual feature that has graced the corner of Cleveland Street and Fort Harrison Avenue since the 1930s.
