Historic Window Removal Clears Path for Accurate Restoration at Woolworth

Removing a second-floor window at Woolworth Building.
Workers remove a second-floor window on the Woolworth building’s north elevation.

Restoration crews at the Woolworth building have completed the removal of 18 windows from the north and south elevations, advancing preparations for historically accurate replacements. Eleven windows facing Cleveland Street and seven along the back elevation were carefully removed to allow for installation of new Winco double-hung units designed to replicate the building’s original 1920s proportions.

To restore the original rhythm of the façade, one nonoriginal window opening will be infilled with brick, while a new opening will be introduced to maintain symmetrical alignment with the historic patterning.
