Antique Mortise Locks Reveal Brown Brothers Building’s 1920s Craftsmanship

Restoration specialist polishes original Brown Brothers door plate for reuse.

At the Brown Brothers Building, preservation begins with details small enough to fit in the palm of a hand. After the original doors were removed from 615–621 Cleveland Street, crews disassembled and set aside the existing hardware, revealing antique P. F. Corbin mortise locks dating to as early as 1927. Now, each plate, lock and fitting is being cleaned and polished for reuse—returning working pieces of the building’s past to daily service.
