Vault Removal Opens New Space in Peoples Bank

A construction worker operates a remote-controlled excavator to demolish a concrete vault wall inside the Peoples Bank building, revealing original brickwork and interior framing.
A remote-operated excavator breaks through concrete during the removal of the nonoriginal bank vault at Peoples Bank.

Crews have removed a large, nonoriginal vault from the interior of the Peoples Bank building, reclaiming valuable floor space and restoring historical proportions. The steel and concrete structure had obstructed circulation and clashed with the early 20th-century design.

Specialized demolition crews dismantled the vault piece by piece to protect surrounding historic walls and floors. Its removal reveals original spatial dimensions and opens new design possibilities for historically sensitive restoration.

This work marks a return to the building’s roots and makes space for a future that honors the past.
